Frequently Asked Questions
A vein specialist is trained to diagnose and treat problems with the circulatory system and has the expertise to recognize symptoms of venous disorders. With a comprehensive evaluation our vein doctor, Dr. Zmily, can not only determine the root cause of your symptoms but also provide much-needed relief.
Do you have little purple blood vessels or big bulging ones on your legs? These two types of veins can be related. Spider veins are the little tiny ones, and varicose veins are the big bulging blue ones. Spider veins occur from prolonged standing over many years even without vein disease. Or spider veins can be a result of varicose vein disease or trauma to an area.
Many providers, doctors of various specialties, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners are trained to treat varicose veins. At Suburban Vein Center, we believe we have extra special qualifications because we can treat the entire cardiovascular system, not just the veins that take the blood back to the heart. Dr. Zmily is an interventional cardiologist and treats arteries, veins, and hearts!!
Healthcare insurance approves varicose vein treatment only if you have symptoms or a history of a blood clot in your leg or lungs. Most insurance will cover an ultrasound and then treatment. Which treatment is covered varies by insurance and the measurements of the veins they require for treatment. Pre-determination of benefits is recommended before treatment.
Varicose vein treatments have evolved substantially over the past decade. In the past, the veins were ‘stripped’ or surgically removed through linear incisions. Now we only remove superficial large vessels by hand and it’s done by small needle holes, called a micro-phlebectomy. The deeper varicose veins are treated with a sealant-type material or a solution that forces the vein to close and reroutes the blood through deeper healthy veins.
